Watson, and the rest of the cast keeps pace admirably as the film goes along. and Jude Law are terrific as the titular detective and his man Friday Dr. Though, that's not to say the film wasn't very fun. Here, we get a bunch of odd details with no context, exposition or even comment that at the end Holmes wraps up into a neat little bundle in a very "as you know, Bob" scene. There were no clues given along the way, and while the readers of the books (which I was, obsessively, in grade school) never have the wit to figure out what's going on before Holmes does, at least they're given the pieces he has to decipher the mystery at hand. Sitting in their rooms at 221 B Baker Street, Holmes is toying with an electric cattle prod. And for that matter, Jude Law doesn't play Watson like the docile friend and physician he is in the stories. Though Sherlock, the detective, does retain his amazing deductive powers, he is definitely not the refined gentleman your grandparents knew. It's a highly satisfying bit of filmmaking. Then we see him carry out those actions at normal speed. delivers an inspired performance that is nearly impossible to resist.ĭuring one of my favorite scenes in "Sherlock Holmes," Downey plays the detective as a bare knuckles boxer who explains in voice over and slow motion just how he'll defeat his opponent. But (and this is a huge "but") the talented Robert Downy Jr.
